Best Bar None launches in Cornwall
May 30, 2007: The Best Bar None scheme, aimed at safer and more enjoyable drinking environments, has made its debut in Cornwall with awards for three pubs in Truro, Falmouth and Penryn.
The scheme, sponsored in Carrick by Truro-based Skinner's Brewery, is UK-wide and backed by the Home Office. Piloted in Manchester in 2003, it promotes responsible management and operation of alcohol-licensed premises with the ultimate intention of offering and maintaining a safe, more welcoming, attractive and lively drinking experience.
The schemes key elements include promotion of socially responsible drinking, commitment to caring for and protecting customers, and to reducing the potential for disorder in town centres and public places arising from alcohol abuse.
In Carrick, pubs competed in three categories late night entertainment venue, town centre venue and community pub (sponsored by Falmouth and Exeter Students Union).
The assessment procedure included an extensive questionnaire scrutinising applicants under the headings of door policy, glass policy, drink and drugs, CCTV, crime prevention, customer care, staff training and the environment.
The awards presentation ceremony took place in the visitor centre at Skinner's Brewery in Truro. Skinner's have sponsored the Carrick scheme in partnership with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Cornwall Fire Brigade, Carrick District Council and Carrick Community Safety Partnership.
The category results were: town centre premises, winner, Zafiros, Truro, runner-up, 5 Degrees West, Falmouth; late night entertainment venue, winner, Remedies, Falmouth, runner-up, Try Dower, Truro (Wetherspoons); community pub, winner, Seven Stars, Penryn (no runner-up).
