Truro's 'king of pubs' re-opens after £700,000 refit

l Raising a glass to the new look William IV are manager Jacqui Wyatt, St Austell Brewery managing director James Staughton and Truro Mayor Susan Callen

July 24, 2008: St Austell Brewery’s William IV pub in Truro, Cornwall, was officially re-opened last night after a major £700,000 four-month refurbishment.

The pub has undergone a full interior transformation, including relocation of the bar, extension of seating areas, ground floor alterations, complete external painting, replacement of windows and upgrading of the kitchen facilities.

The conservatory and beer garden have also both had a facelift, with the garden area undergoing extensive landscaping to include a new decked area.

The Mayor of Truro, Cllr Susan Callen, officially opened the pub, and along with more 80 invited guests raised a glass to its future success. She said: “It is a pleasure to be here to see the result of what has been many months of planning, refurbishment and hard work. The team at St Austell Brewery has created a beautiful pub which is now certainly fit for a king. I wish them every success.”

The pub opened its doors to the public at 10am this morning offering a new menu alongside a full range of St Austell Brewery ales. The pub will serve top quality traditional ‘pub grub’ in family friendly surroundings every day until 10pm.

The newly refurbished pub also welcomes new manager Jacqui Wyatt and head chef Gary Drew, along with a team of 14 staff to manage the bar and kitchen.

The bar will make the most of fresh local produce in its menu and aim very much at a traditional customer clientele. In line with all St Austell Brewery pubs there will be a no-discount pricing policy for drinks, and a complete ban on happy hours or drinks price promotions.

Adam Luck, estate director, said the refurbishment had given the pub a new lease of life. He said: “St Austell Brewery has invested more than £700,000 in this exciting project which really gives this traditional pub a fresh look and feel.

“The William IV is something special — with superb local food and a great selection of traditional St Austell Brewery ales and wines in the heart of Truro the pub has something for everyone. The latest investment will help ensure that William IV continues its reign as the king of pubs.”

Truro Chamber of Commerce chairman David Tandy praised the brewery for making such a considerable investment in the city. He said: “St Austell Brewery has a great team ethos which really shines through, and when you go to a St Austell Brewery pub you are guaranteed a high level of service.

“It’s great to have one in the heart of the city and I hope everyone in Truro enjoys it for many years to come.”
