Pub Business exhibition: preview

April 17, 2008: The Morning Advertiser’s Pub Business exhibition — which takes place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, on May 20 and 21, has a host of new features geared towards the licensed trade.

Beer and food matching with Richard Fox, the British Institute of Innkeeping's Business Doctor, Trevor Brown and The Shaker Bar School are just some of the highlights. Plus, if you’re looking to source and buy new products, 150 suppliers will be under one roof. To date, almost 4,000 people have registered for the exhibition.

Adam Freeth and the Shaker team will show that it is not just style bars that make money out of cocktails. Whatever type of outlet you have, you really can serve up profitable cocktails that will wow your customers.

Registration is free and for every 200th person who registers will receive a bottle of Champagne. Register online by visiting www.pubbusiness.co.uk or call 01923 690627.

Richard Fox, author and television presenter, will go through a series of pairings in the beer and food matching theatre. During each 30-minute session, visitors will be tutored on how to develop a beer menu that will complement their food offering.

The beer arena and farmer’s market will showcase more than 20 local food and drink companies. Visitors will be able to talk to the producers so they can learn how to both use and up-sell the ingredients. With the public seeking local produce from the shelves of their supermarket, customers are looking towards their local for regional produce on their menus.

On Tuesday, May 20, the winners of the International Wine Challenge (IWC) will be jointly announced in London and at Pub Business. All the wines on display have been selected by the IWC with the pub in mind. Experts will be on hand to lead you through the wine maze.

Over the course of two days, visitors can listen to 10 informative seminars and a debate organised by the Brewing, Food & Beverage Industry Suppliers Association (BFBI). Industry experts will give advice on how to increase turnover and the number of happy customers. Live case studies and question and answer sessions will provide an opportunity to listen to advice on how to up-sell high-yield product lines, how to increase both wet and dry sales and how to get the most out of food. Plus, several of the major pubcos, showcasing a number of leased and tenanted opportunities, will be on hand to take business questions.

Brakspear, Enterprise Inns, Admiral Taverns, Marston’s Pub Company, Everards, Punch Taverns, Davenports, Trust Inns and Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises have all signed up to the event. Their national recruitment teams will be on hand to answer questions — the show is a perfect opportunity to pick the brains of some of the most experienced business development and recruitment managers in the business.

Show manager Ross Piggott said: “So many good things can happen as a result of a simple conversation. I want everyone who attends the show to walk away from the NEC with a new product or an idea that they can take back to their pub and put into practice...

“The show is also geared towards helping people get their foot on the licensed trade ladder. The fact that we have several of the major pubcos exhibiting at the show is great. They have fully embraced the event and are looking for new entrepreneurs to enter the industry. If anyone knows of anybody who is interested in entering the licensed trade, bring them along to the show. Pub Business is a great business to be in.”
