Ban public drinking urges chief constable

August 15, 2007: A top police officer has called for a ban on drinking in public, restricting the consumption of alcohol to private property and licensed premises such as pubs.

The measure would, in the opinion of Cheshire Chief Constable David Fahy, be the best way to tackle the problem of anti-social behaviour on Britain's streets.

In the wake of the murder of Gary Newlove, in Warrington, after he remonstrated with local youths over vandalism, Mr Fahy called for parents to take control of their children's drinking.

He also criticised the practice of cut-price alcohol sales in supermarkets.

The Home Office has said there are no plans to ban drinking in public, nor to raise the legal drinking age to 21, which the chief constable has also suggested.
