Regent Inns cautious as sales fall
December 4, 2007: Regent Inns has reported a dip in sales of 2.8% in the 21 weeks to November 24, highlighting just how tricky the pub sector is becoming.
Increased competition following licensing changes and people going out later at night and drinking less are two areas of concern pointed out by executive chairman Bob Ivell in his report to Regent Inns annual meeting.
He said: "We remain cautious in our outlook, given the trading conditions in the late-night market, the likely slowdown in consumer spending, the full impact of the smoking ban and England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
"However, the traditionally strong Christmas and New Year trading period is ahead of us. In addition, we will continue to look at corporate activity opportunities where we believe the business is well placed to deliver value through consolidation."
