Seeing red: new version of Guinness is tested

January 27, 2007: First Guinness went extra cold — now its turning red!

The Irish brewer is testing the Red version of the brew — which uses malt that has been roasted slightly less than the black version — in various venues throughout the UK.

In all other aspects — creamy head, slow pour time — it's just like normal Guinness.

It's been brewed especially for the British market. There are no plans to market it in Ireland, although over the water the firm is market testing a 2.8% lower alcohol version of the original beer. The normal ABV is 4.1%.
