Voodoo quality reflected in price
June 26, 2008: Matt Allyn, owner of Voodoo Brewing Co., has begun shipping his new beer out of Pennsylvania, USA.
The beer is unusual in that Allyn makes use of 13 different kinds of hops. He has gone for quality ingredients, even though this means his beer sells at a premium price $9 a piece.
Each beer that Allyn has created requires specific ingredients. The wheat ale, for example, contains coriander, orange peels, and twelve kinds of peppercorn. The price also recognises the fact that the price of hops has increased as much as 400% in recent months.
For now, Voodoo Brewing is a small operation with six individual beers in production. In 2007, Allyn shipped his first batch to Vella Vista Beverage in Philadelphia.
"They blew out the door," said Jordan FetFatzes, who is the store's manager, with customers clearly seeing beyond the high price tag.
For now, Allyn is hoping to sell 1,000 barrels of Voodoo brews. "We want to stay small," Allyn says. "And we want to do it for the best price we can."
