January 20, 2007: Cains brewery is launching an authentically brewed Double Bock lager (8%) to celebrate Liverpool’s 800 years of city status.

The Double Bock – a style of dark lager first brewed in Munich – is part of a fresh seasonal list that includes a new organic wheat beer, a black lager and a creamy stout.

Bocks were traditionally brewed on the continent to commemorate special occasions, which is why Cains decided to dedicate its own version to its home city’s 800th birthday celebrations.

The beer, made with Munich malt and Saaz and Hallertau hops, will make its debut in February.

Cains joint managing director Ajmail Dusanj explained: “King John signed the Charter which granted Liverpool city status in 1207 and I’m pretty sure a few pints were drunk by the city’s inhabitants to celebrate that fact.

“As Double Bock takes longer to mature than most lagers its arrival was often timed to commemorate something special. It is to be served only in half pints to fully appreciate the deliciously full, velvety rich flavours. We thought it would be a great opportunity to help the city celebrate.

“Like all of our seasonal ales, it will be on sale in all Cains pubs and as a guest beer throughout the region.”
