Skinner's sponsors working boats championship

June 15, 2007: Cornwall’s Skinners Brewery has extended its support of sailing in the county with its appointment as a major sponsor of the three-day Falmouth Working Boats World Championships June 22 to 24.

The Falmouth Working Boats, with several well over 100 years old, traditionally dredge for oysters using sail power alone during the winter and then race in regattas during the summer.

The World Championships are organised by Falmouth Working Boats Association and supported by St Mawes Sailing Club and St Mawes Social Club.

Brewery managing director Steve Skinner said: “These championships are truly an event in a league of their own, with so much history attached to the boats and such a great spectacle when they are in full sail.

“We are delighted to be involved. The championships are rapidly becoming a very firmly established date on the Cornish sailing calendar and, who knows, their status could even start to get on a par with the Isles of Scilly world gig racing championships.”

Skinners, better known for its support of Cornish rugby and surfing, made its sailing debut last month with its sponsorship of the IRC South West Championship event staged by Falmouth’s Royal Cornwall Yacht Club.
