Get to know German beers

June 14, 2006: All eyes have turned to Germany this summer for the World Cup, but anyone who was unable to get a ticket for the England games can try the taste of Germany at the Great British Beer Festival in London, from August 1 to 5.

Visitors to the festival, at Earl's Court, can sign up to a tutored tasting of German beers which feature in the Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA's) latest publication, The Good Beer Guide Germany.

CAMRA press officer Owen Morris said: “Too many people associate German beer with the likes of Becks and Holsten Pils, but Germany has an incredibly diverse brewing heritage that rivals anywhere in the world.

“By coming to the tasting session visitors to the festival will have the chance to learn how to identify individual beer styles and the subtleties of flavour from experts in brewing.

"Maybe they will be inspired to pick up a copy of the Good Beer Guide Germany and fly to the homeland to discover more of these beers for themselves. After all, it features more than 1,250 breweries, around 2000 pubs and 7,500 beers from all four corners of Germany.”

The Good German Beer Tasting will take place on Friday, August 4, at 1pm. It will be hosted by Lorenzo Dabove and Tom Perera. The cost is £10 for CAMRA members, £12 non-members.
