£60 bottle of beer aids children's hospice

August 9, 2007: Is this Cornwall’s most expensive bottle of beer? If so, no-one is complaining, as the £60 it cost has gone to a good cause.

v
Mary Murfin, of the Children's Hospice South West, and Tristan Thornton, general manager at Skinner's Brewery, with the £60 bottle of Butterfly.

The 'No 1' bottle of Skinner's Butterfly was put up for sealed-bid auction at the Royal Cornwall Show.

It was one of a limited edition of just 2,000 numbered bottles sold in support of the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The highest bidder was a Helston, Cornwall, man, who weighed in with £50 — and then topped it up with an extra tenner when sending off his cheque after learning he was the lucky one.

Butterfly is still available in the brewery shop at Truro-based Skinners Brewery, which has supported CHSW for many years.

The region now has two such hospices, in Barnstaple and near Bristol, supporting hundreds of children and their families every year.
