More to Burns Night than whisky and haggis

January 10, 2007: With Burns Night coming up (on January 25), Innis & Gunn’s Original Oak Aged Beer (6.6%) makes an ideal accompaniment to some fine Scottish foods.

l Innis & Gunn Oak Aged Beer mixes well with seafood

For instance, try it with Loch Fyne Bradan Orach smoked salmon (£5.50 for 100g – www.lochfyne.com or call 01499 600264). Innis & Gunn’s delicate oak-derived vanilla flavours make the beer ideal for fish such as hot smoked salmon (naturally creamy itself), cold smoked salmon and gravadlax. This Highland smoked salmon (Bradan Orach means ‘golden salmon’ in Gaelic) has a full rich flavour.

The oak ageing of the Innis & Gunn imparts fresh fruity, oaky flavours, creating a perfect match for soft and hard cheeses including mature and smoked Cheddars, softer cheeses like Brie or Cambazola, or firm goat’s cheeses. Made from full-fat Guernsey cow’s milk, the Kintyre Brie from Howgate (www.inverlochcheese.com, www.isleofkintyre.com or 01586 552692) has a creamy, buttery taste.

Each year on 25th January, Scots worldwide pay tribute to a national luminary with festivities including a traditional feast of “haggis, neeps and tatties” to mark the great poet and balladeer’s presumed birthday. While Innis & Gunn beautifully complements the spiciness of a traditional Burns Night haggis, the alternative spread offers a lighter yet still delectable option for those honouring Scotland’s best-loved bard.

Dougal Sharp, managing director of Innis & Gunn, says: “Robbie Burns was a champion of the people - his life and work is celebrated worldwide to this day. His poetry still draws together those from all walks of life to unite for Burns Night; to eat, drink and enjoy the company of friends.

"Revellers around the world will enjoy our Oak Aged Beer on Burns Night, and we thought that this alternative Burns Night menu would appeal as another option to the more traditional haggis, neeps and tatties on this special night.”

n Innis & Gunn Oak Aged Beer is priced at £1.49 in Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Co-Op, Threshers and independent retailers. It can also be found in bars, including All Bar One, Browns and Corney & Barrow. Launched in 2003, it goes through a 77-day maturation process (ten times the national average for beer) including 30 days in lightly toasted American white oak barrels. The beer is naturally carbonated, which gives it a light effervescence similar to Champagne.
