Brews in brief

March 6, 2008: Wadworth is launching seasonal cask ale St George and the Dragon to commemorate England's patron saint. The 4.5% pale ale, produced under the Manns brand, with its firey amber hue and crisp, tangy taste, is targeted at patriotic drinkers who want to celebrate their patron saint in the same way the Irish do. It will be on sale from March 20 until the end of April.

March 5, 2008: Everards is to release nine seasonal ales this year, four of which will be new brews. 2008 has already seen Tiger Triple Gold and the return of Pitch Black. Sly Fox, with a cunning hint of ginger, is back for March and April. More beers will be announced in due course.

March 3, 2008: Buntingford Brewery has produced no less than five new beers so far this year. The latest, A Little Bitter Science, is a 3.9% golden ale to mark the Cambridge Science Festival in the middle of this month.

March 3, 2008: Creamy Stout (4.1%) is Cains' March special, with an eye on St Patrick's Day (March 17), of course. The brewer describes it as "an elegant and smooth, black velvet stout with a beautiful creamy taste. Brewed with dark roast chocolate malt, the rich malty taste is perfectly infused with a delicate blend of hops and esters."

February 2, 2008: Hall & Woodhouse Hopping Hare is back for a spring run. The 4.5% brew is a light, refreshing, golden ale with a distinctive hoppy aroma and slight citrus undertones, achieved with the addition of Super Styrian hops to the copper twice during the brewing process, and then Styrian Goldings hops added in cask for extra aroma. January 30, 2008: JW Lees is adding John Willie's (4.5%) and Scorcher (4.2%) to its regular ale list, after successful runs as seasonals. John Willie's (named after the brewery's founder) is a premium, light coloured bitter with a nutty finish from Northdown and Golding hops and pale ale malt, while Scorcher offers a fruity aroma and refreshing hop finish. Also going on the permanent list is Brewer's Dark (3.5%), previously badged as GB Mild, a smooth, easy-drinking beer with liquorice and chocolate notes and a malty aftertaste. The brewer also promises a raft of special ales throughout the year.

January 25, 2008: Wychwood Brewery's seasonal Dirty Tackle (4%), its most popular seasonal beer of 2007, is returning to coincide with this year's Six Nations tournament. This is a full-bodied malty beer with a clean citrus aroma featuring Crystal and Wheat malts with Challenger and Northdown hops.”
