The Good Beer Guide 2007

v

The Good Beer Guide, now in its 34th edition, is the UK beer drinker's Bible. Compiled from reports submitted by CAMRA members around the country, the book is a truly independent snapshot of the pubs serving the best real ale. That prime criterion underlines the differences between this and another well-known pub guide.

The 2007 guide reveals that demand for real ale has led to the birth of 84 new breweries in the UK in the last 12 months

However, the outlet is not universally rosy: editor Roger Protz pens an article saying that he cull of regional brewers must be stopped in order to ensure a good choice of beers for drinkers. He puts forward an argument for threatened breweries to be run and owned by their management and workers or turned into community co-ops.

The book also highlights the march of celebrity chefs moving into the pub trade — the likes of Antony Worrall Thompson, Jean-Christophe Novelli, Heston Blumenthal, Phil Vickery and Roxy Beaujolais all explain what they love about cooking in pubs.

The traditional pub has been ravaged by change over the past few decades and CAMRA has put huge efforts into identifying the last-remaining examples. The new Good Beer Guide identifies 188 pubs which are still much as they were half a century ago. In addition the guide lists a further 63 examples where there are particular features or rooms in otherwise altered buildings which CAMRA considers to be of truly national importance.

I'm personally glad to see my 2007 guide. Like othe CAMRA aficionadoes, I suspect, my 200 edition was showing its age and about to fall apart. The new GBG is always and always an informative and illuminating read. Long may it thrive.

l The Good Beer Guide 2007 is available from CAMRA priced £14.99. Order by calling 01727 867201 or order online at www.camra.org.uk
