Snoozy Suzy (4.3%):
Copper-coloured, mid-strength bitter made with Optic malt and a single variety of hop called Susan, hence the name. In terms of flavour, a session beer; in terms of strength, not so. The hop is very dominant and one of those flavours that divides opinion. (DN: 29-06-05)
Winters Tail (5.3%):
Down (boy) from 5.8% in 2004, this is a thick, sweet, malty winter brew. Definitely one to finish off the session. (DN)

A mid-brown beer with apple on the aroma and a deep fruit palate, leading to slightly sweet finish.

DRIFTWOOD

Blue Hills Bitter (4.2%): A refreshing amber session bitter.

DUCHY ORIGINALS

Organic Ale (5%): Malt from Plumage Archer Barley, from British organic farms including Prince Charles' Highgrove. Ruby colour, balanced bitter flavour. (DN)
Organic Winter Ale (6.2%):
At 6.2% this is a new venture for Duchy Originals, following on from their normal Organic Ale. It is brewed by Wychwood at its Witney, Oxfordshire, brewery and is a deep copper coloured beer. After a fruit cakey aroma one gets a good flavour of the organic malts, turning citrussy to a pleasantly bitter finish. There are rich flavours, yet the beet is also very pure and clean tasting. A very pleasing winter brew. (DN)

DURHAM

Bede's Gold (4.2%): Slightly gold in colour, this has a complex hopping which provides a smooth and interesting flavour and aroma.
Benedictus (8.4%): A smooth barley wine. A lively hop grist mingles with the peardrop quality of higher alcohols.
Bishop's Gold (4.5%): Pale gold with a blend of striking hops. The flavour is dominated by refreshing lemon notes.
Black Abbot (5.3%): A dark ruby coloured dunkel beer. A form of lager beer, the flavour is a cross between brown ale and mild, with smooth toffee notes.
Black Velvet (4%): This is black like a stout, but with the strength of a porter. Body is large and smooth, deceptively fooling the senses into believing it to be much stronger than it really is. Traditional English hops brightly balance rich liquorice and roast flavours.
Bonny Lass (3.9%): Ruby coloured but with the flavour of a 'white' beer. The light fruity flavour is deceptive.
Canny Lad (4.3%): Rich, malty scotch-type beer. Six malts make a complex body and ruby colour.
Cathedral Gold (4.5%): A blend of Magnificat and Morningsong.
Celtic (4.2%): Durham Brewery's first brew, a traditional golden beer. All-English ingredients provide a flavour that speaks of early 20th century.
Cuthberts Cross (4.7%): Pale gold in colour, but rich with grapefruit notes, this bitter is strong in alcohol and flavour, yet is thirst-quenching and easy to drink. Named after St Cuthbert's Cross which can be seen in Durham Cathedral.
Dark Ruby (3.8%): A rich mild with an old-fashioned dark roast flavour. Made with black, brown , pale chocolate and amber malts, with English Fuggles and Bramling Cross hops.
Dark Secret (4.3%): Ruby in colour, this is a big beer for its strength. Roast and coloured malts give coffee flavours.
Definitive (3.8%): A floral, sweet aroma, with a hint of strawberries, leads to a clean, spicy grapefruit flavour, with some ginger. A dry and thirst-quenching finish with a subtle developing bitterness.
Durham County (4.4%): A strong form of Celtic. More body and more complex hopping.
Evensong (5%): Based on an original recipe from 1937, this deep ruby coloured bitter has the character of early 20th century ales.
Frostbite (3.6%, winter): The winter counterpart to Sunstroke. Despite its low ABV its depth of malt and hop character makes it seem stronger than it is.
Green Goddess (3.8%): Created for the Beauty of Hops curry beer competition. English Goldings hops give a traditional spicey bitter flavour.
Invincible (4.5%): A stronger form of Magus with a clean and powerful flavour.
Magnificat (6.5%): A very rich, golden, original-style IPA. Despite being strong, this beer is not too sweet, but has a luscious malty base over which a complex bitterness makes balancing, thirst-quenching properties. Bottled as St Cuthbert.
Magus (3.8%): Durham's best selling beer, voted CAMRA Beer of the North East 2002. A pale session ale with lager qualities, it is more bitter than Sunstroke, but still aromatic, with citrus overtones. A complex blend of English, American, Slovenian and Czech hops provide an interest that develops as you drink. Very good with food.
Nine Altars (5.2%): Ultra smooth, rich malt notes balanced with Bramling Cross hops to produce a full traditional English ale. Low hopping allows a complex malt grist to the fore, giving full toffee and caramel notes, whilst being fairly dry. Commemorates the Nine Altars of Durham Cathedral.
Prior's Gold (4.5%): A very round and full hop aroma and flavour, golden in colour.
Sanctuary (6%): A rich ruby-coloured old ale. Smooth and easy with traditional Goldings and Fuggles hops. Named after the Sanctuary knocker at Durham Cathedral.
Scimitar (4.1%): A lager with a clean palate and the spice and bitterness of an ale.
Sunstroke (3.6%, April to October): A light and crisp bitter, hugely aromatic, with Saaz and Styrian Goldings hops.
Temptation (10%): A Russian stout rarely seen in the cask. Massive body with liquorice and coffee flavours mingles with the esters and potency of higher alcohols.
White Amarillo (4.1%): Amarillo, a light and floral American hop, is predominant, with Goldings to add a little more spice. A deliciously fragrant, light session beer.
White Angel (4.1%, Christmas 2001): A blend of White Gold and White Velvet.
White Bishop (4.8%): A premium ale using lager malt. American fruity hops make this strong beer easy going and satisfying. Won the silver award in the strong bitters category at the 1999 CAMRA Great British Beer Festival.
White Bullet (4.4%): A pale, robust premium bitter made with hops from New Zealand.
White Crystal (4.3%): Made with the aromatic American hop Crystal to give a clean, spicy and refreshing flavour.

White Magic (7%): A rich and hoppy India Pale Ale made to a 19th century recipe.
White Sapphire (4.5%): Light and easy, aromatic and refreshing; fills the mouth with a zesty tang and leaves a hint of spice in the finish.
White Velvet (4.2%): Light in colour with a smooth, malty body, complemented by aromatic and fruity hopping.
