ABBEY ALES
Bath Star (4.5%), Bellringer (4.2%), Black Friar (5.3%), Chorister (4.5%), Mild (4%), Resurrection (4.6%), Salvation (4.8%), Steeplejack (4.7%), Twelfth Night (5%), White Friar (5%)
ABBEY BELLS
1911 Celebration Ale (4.8%): Launched
at the start of the 2003 football season as a celebration, in Bradford
City's centenary year, of the club's FA Cup success, way back in 1911.
Claret in colour, for reasons which will not be lost on City fans. A malty
ale with an aroma of newly-fallen autumn leaves.
Black Satin (6.2%): A sweet stout
a rich and warming brew which is usually brewed only around Christmas
and New Year, or on special occasions.
Cordelia's Gift (4.3%): Pearl malt, a dash of chocolate
malt and Fuggles hops unite to produce a sinisterly dark beer which has
a taste reminiscent of dandelion and burdock, while retaining a modicum
of maltiness. Gives a subtle aroma of freshly cracked Christmas nuts.
Grease (4.6%): This beer was produced in memory
of the brewer's 750cc motorcycle which had to be sold to help set up the
brewery. Golden in colour, it has a heavy and very late addition of Goldings
hops. Smells of honey and tastes of liquorice.
Hoppy Daze (4.1%): A very pale beer with
a generous helping of hops giving a wonderful tang. An orange and lemon
nose accompanied by toffee overtones the brewer's own favourite.
Monday's Child (3.7%): A pale session beer which
could be described as a purist's dream, consisting of Maris Otter pale
malt, hops and nothing else. The main quota of hops is added late and
the residue is added very late. The result is an unassuming and refreshing
beer with fruity banana notes and a clean mouthfeel.
Original Bitter (5.1%): A no-nonsense strong English
ale, quite dark in colour. Has been described by two publicans as "having
complex flavours" and "possessing a whisky nose". In common
with all Abbey Bells beers, a single variety of hops, in this instance
Goldings, contrives with the pale and crystal malts to produce the complexity
of flavour.
Santa's Stocking Filler (4.5%): Maris Otter
and crystal malts combine to produce a beer the colour of Rudolph's nose.
Caramel undertones can be detected through the malty flavours.
ABBEYDALE
Absolution (5.3%), Advent (4.6%, Christmas), Alchemy
(4.2%, Archangel (4.7%), Ascension (5.3%), Belfry (4.5%), Best Bitter
(4%), Black Bishop (4.2%), Black Lurcher (7%), Black Mass (6.66%), Brimstone

(5.8%), HIC! (4%), Holy Water (6%), Illumination (4.8%), Invocation (4.2%),
James the First (7.3%)
Last Rites (11%): Ridiculously drinkable, as I
and a couple of others discovered at the 2005 Exeter Festival of Winter
Ales, where it was runner-up champion beer. Pale in colour, it has a sweet
barley taste, kept in check by the hops. Definitely a half-pint at the
end of the session! (DN: January 2005)
Matins (3.6%), Moonshine (4.3%), Original Sin (4.9%), Prophecy (4.5%),
Redemption (5%), Resolution (4.5%), Restoration (4.2%, August 2006), Resurrection

Barley Mow (5%)
Bitter (3.7%): Dry and bitter, with a hint of sulphur.
(DN)
Broadside (4.7%)
East Green (4.3%): Light golden in colour, with
subtle citrus and grassy hop aromas, East Green is brewed to be carbon
neutral, Adnams working in co-operation with experts from the University
of East Anglia. (brewery notes 02-06-08)
Explorer (4.3%): The name is explained by the use
of two hops from the New World, Chinook and Columbus. Very enjoyable.
(DN)
Innovation (6.7%): Hoppy and golden in colour, brewed with Maris Otter
barley and malted wheat, and Styrian Goldings and Columbus hops. An assertive
grapefruit and herbal bitterness is balanced by a subtle sweetness.
(brewery notes 12-12-07)
May Day (5%), Old Ale (ABV not known), Oyster Stout (4.3%),
Regatta (4.3%)
Fisherman (4.5%): Rich, dark, malty, Christmas
cakey; a beer very much in the old ale tradition. One
of my favourite winter beers of 2004/5. (DN)
Tally Ho (7%)
ALCAZAR
Alcazar Ale (4%): A pale ale, full flavoured,
with a fresh, pleasant aroma and crisp, dry, hoppy aftertaste.
Black Fox (3.9%): A traditional dark mild, brewed in spring.
Bombay Castle IPA (6.5%): The Bombay Castle was a 1,200 ton
merchant ship owned by the British East India Company which plied the
waters between Britain and India from 1792 to 1804. It no doubt carried
consignments of precious India Pale Ale to the colony. Brewed with Maris
Otter pale malt and liberal quantities of English hops, this is a traditional
English-style India Pale Ale. Available in cask at Alcazar's brewery tap,
the Fox & Crown, during November and December. A silver medal winner
at the 2005 SIBA East Midlands competition then a gold medal winner in
the same contest a year later.
Bowman's Bounty (7%): Brewed in the classic India Pale Ale style,
this bottled beer is strong, hoppy and pleasantly aromatic and a perfect
accompaniment to Thai, Indian, Mexican and other spicy foods.
Desert Fox (4.3%, summer): A cask conditioned lager, brewed for the
summer months and served extra cold.
Devout Stout (8%): This is a strong, full-bodied, English-style imperial
stout, smooth on the palate with a light hop finish. This bottled brew
is an excellent accompaniment to seafood and red meats, or on its own
at the end of a meal.
Fox Tale Ale (4.9%): A classic amber bitter with a malt sweet edge
to start and a full dry hop flavour at the end. In Alcazar's brewery
tap, the Fox & Crown, it's known as Brush Bitter.
Gaoler's Ale (7.5%): A dark, amber, traditional old ale brewed with
English malt and hops, robust in character with a unique malty flavour.
An excellent after-dinner bottled beer, superbly complementing cheese,
fruit and sweet desserts, or on its own as an ideal evening refreshment.
Little John's Myth (6%): A smooth-flavoured robust bottled porter
with a fine balance of English malts and hops, and hints of chocolate
and vanilla. It is delightful when accompanied by shellfish, meat dishes
and particularly with chocolate and coffee flavoured dessert dishes.
Maiden's Magic (5%): A smooth, lightly hopped and aromatic English-style
bottled brown ale, pleasantly malty with a hint of honey in aroma and
taste. It complements light seafood dishes, mild cheese dishes, vegetable
dishes and salads.

maple syrup. Winner of a SIBA gold meal in 2004.

of coffee and chocolate.

a pleasant floral aroma and light hoppy aftertaste.
Nottingham Nog (4.2%): A traditional amber session ale with full-bodied
malt flavour and a mild hop finish.
Scarlet Fervour (5.5%): A traditional English style strong bottled
bitter, amber in colour, full bodied, with a pronounced hop character.
A perfect accompaniment to typical English pub dinners such as roast beef
and Yorkshire pudding, and steak and kidney pie.
Vixen's Vice (5.2%): A pale strong ale with well-rounded hop flavour
and a fresh hop finish.
Windjammer IPA (6%): A full-bodied India Pale Ale brewed with five
varieties of North American hops. Smooth and sweet on the palate, with
